Tooth Implant

Tooth Implant:

Dental implants are a recent technology used for replacing missing teeth with a most natural look.
The dental implant is a titanium screw that is surgically placed in the jaw. This implant eventually fuses with the bone around the jaw about two to six months after surgery. These implants can then be used to anchor crowns, bridges and dentures.

As the illustration to the left shows, the dental implant goes into the jaw exactly like a natural tooth root.

Dental crowns can be made to cover the implant post. Many people who have implants for a comfortable and cosmetic fit use porcelain fused to gold crowns.
This is the "high tech" solution and the most natural replacement to replace the lost tooth/teeth without harming the remaining teeth and soft tissue.

Patients can receive several benefits from doing the dental implant. Ideal results include restoration of normal appearance of the missing tooth/teeth. Patients can achieve considerable confidence during eating and talking. Also patients can enjoy the long term safety of replacing their lost teeth with dental implant.

Preoperative evaluation
Dental implant is not suitable for everyone. Patients are evaluated at a consultation appointment with respect to their jaw size, bone volume, quality and quantity of bone, also the condition of the opposing dentition. The anatomy of the front of the lower jaw is studied by using x-rays taken at varying angles. This evaluation is to ensure suitability for the tooth implant as the components for the treatment are all precision made prefabricated components. Therefore the size and shape of the jaw must comply with established criteria.

Treatment procedures
The first step is the placement of titanium implants to replace the lost teeth. These implants will remain covered underneath the gum for approximately 3-6 months for lower teeth and 6 months for upper teeth. During this time, the implants should fuse to the bone.
The second step of the procedure involves uncovering the implants and attaching a post to each implant. This completes the foundation on which the new teeth will be placed. In some instances, the surgeon may decide to place the posts at the time of surgery.

The final step is the placement of new teeth by the dentist. With techniques that ensure optimal size, shape, colour and fit, the replacement teeth should blend with the patient’s facial characteristics while providing support needed for natural appearance.

Periodontics

Deep cleaning or root planning:

It is a surgery for a reduction of periodontal pocket. Gum disease is a bacterial infection that creates a periodontal pocket which can not clean by brushing and flossing. Gum disease causes tooth loss after the age of 30.

It involves smoothing the root surfaces of the teeth with thin curettes so gum tissue can more firmly reattach to roots that are clean and smooth to prevent tooth loss and sensitivity problems.

Endodontics (Root Canal Treatement)

Root canal treatment or endodontics is a treatment for a pulp (blood / nerve supply of a tooth) which infected through decay or injury. The symptoms of infection can range from dull ache to severe pain and the tooth may be tender when you bite. Some cases may learn about pain, darkness and moving tooth after the earlier period.

The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection and abscesses from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. If root canal treatment (RCT) is not carried out, the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be taken out.

Root canal treatment is performed under local anesthesia.

In the past, root canal treatment is a time-consuming procedure. Around 2 – 3 visits are required. Now, only 1 visit is required. The procedure starts with a removal of infected pulp and follow with drainage of abscesses (if any). The root canal is then cleaned. The last process is getting filling done.

After root canal treatment, dental crown may be necessary to provide extra support and strength to the tooth.

Dental Bridge:

A dental bridge is a custom-made false tooth or teeth, which are permanently placed between two healthy teeth, filling in the area left by a missing tooth or teeth. The bridge is held in place by porcelain crowns placed on the healthy teeth on each side of space to be filled.

Types of Dental Bridges: There are three main types of bridges:
1. Traditional bridges involve creating a crown for the tooth on either side of the missing tooth, with a pontic in between. Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge and are made of either porcelain fused to metal or ceramics.
2. Cantilever bridges are used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth.
3. Maryland bonded bridges (also called a resin-bonded bridge or a Maryland bridge) are made of porcelain teeth and gums supported by a metal framework. Metal wings on each side of the bridge are bonded to your existing teeth.

There are three basic types of materials for dental bridges
1. Porcelain fused to metal dental bridges
2. All porcelain dental bridges
3. All metal dental bridges (Gold)
The all porcelain dental bridges and porcelain fused to metal (PFM) dental bridges are tooth colored bridges. Your dentist can help you decide which to be used based on the location of the missing tooth (teeth) and its function. PFM dental bridges are usually used to restore back teeth where the forces of chewing and grinding are strongest. All porcelain dental bridges are the most aesthetic and are used almost exclusively for front teeth where the need for strength is not as critical. Gold dental bridges are the most durable and offer the most precise fit. Gold dental bridge does not chip.

Additionally, spaces from missing teeth can cause your other teeth and your gums to become far more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease.

Dental Crown:

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth – covering the tooth to restore a tooth that has fractured, has a large cavity, has an old filling that has failed, or has had root canal therapy. Crown can also be used for cosmetic purposes; its shape, size, strength, and/or to improve its appearance.

Common types of materials used for dental crowns

3. All Metal Dental Crowns (Gold)

Dental Crowns Types
1. Porcelain Fused-to-Metal Dental Crowns
Advantage: Porcelain fused-to-metal crowns have a very natural appearance. They are usually used to restore
back teeth where the forces of chewing and grinding are strongest.
Disadvantage: They have a metal substructure and require an opaque below the porcelain. Sometimes the metal
underlying the crown's porcelain can show through as a dark line, especially at the gum line and even more so if
your gums recede.
2. All Porcelain Dental Crowns / All Ceramic Dental Crowns
Advantage: All porcelain crowns or all ceramic crowns are considered to be the most aesthetically pleasing,
are used almost exclusively for front teeth where the need for strength is not as critical and it is so easily
matched in color to the surrounding teeth.
Disadvantage: They are not as strong as porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and they wear down opposing teeth a
little more than metal or resin crowns. All-ceramic crowns are a good choice for front teeth.
3. All Metal Dental Crowns (Gold Crowns)
Advantage: It is the simplest and least complicated preparation as there is minimal tooth structure removal with
as much as possible of the healthy tooth structure remaining untouched. Gold is also easier to fit to the area
where the tooth and crown meet for a better fit. Gold is also a healthier environment for the gum tissue.
Disadvantage: The biggest disadvantage to gold crowns is the cosmetic aspect, unless it is being used in the
back of your mouth.

Dentures:

Dentures are removable appliances that are used to replace missing teeth.
Normally they are made of acrylic resin but can also be incorporated into metal or porcelain for additional structural support.

There are two main types of dentures: Complete/Full Dentures and Partial Dentures. Full dentures are used to replace the upper and lower arches while no teeth remain.

Dentures aid patients in chewing food, smiling, swallowing, restoring esthetics, supporting facial soft tissues, cheeks and lips. It also helps to reestablish the vertical dimension of the patient’s bite which is the distance between the chin and nose. In addition dentures rid you of pronunciation problems caused by missing teeth.

Veneer:

Dental veneer is a fast, effective way to deal with many small dental defect such as small gaps between neighboring teeth, shallow caries in the enamel, small chips, or discoloration that does not respond to teeth whitening.

Dental veneer is a thin covering of porcelain or composite over the enamel of a tooth.

Veneers are common for teeth that are too small, too big, or have uneven surfaces. It is very useful for people to have cosmetic improvements (i.e.: shade, shape, lip support, cheek support, etc.).

Tooth Straightening (Braces):

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of problems in the alignment of teeth and jaws.

The technical term for these problems is malocclusion, which means bad bite.

Ceramic Inlay / Onlay:

Ceramic Inlay / Onlay is often used to repair the damage that involve over the biting surface of a tooth rather than using simple filling or crown. Inlay / Onlay can be porcelain, gold, or composite resin cast sections that are bonded to the damaged area of a tooth.

Inlay is similar to the fillings and lie inside the cusp tips of the tooth; Onlay is a more extensive reconstruction that covers one or more cusps of a tooth.

We use either gold or Empress Porcelain Inlay / Onlay.

Porcelain is now becoming the material of choice because of its strength and potential to match the natural color of your tooth.

Tooth Colored Filling:

Tooth colored fillings can be used to repair problems with either front or back teeth. Most of the materials for these white fillings are made of resin. In front teeth, these fillings are used to repair dental decay, erosion or abrasion problems. In back teeth, white fillings can be used to repair small decay or erosion problems, or replace the silver fillings to looks just as if the tooth had no filling at all. For more severe problems, these fillings may not be the best solution, and we may need to use ceramic inlays / onlays, ceramic crowns or crowns. These fillings can sometimes be used to repair “sensitive tooth.

Teeth cleaning or scaling:

Teeth cleaning or teeth scaling is the removal of dental plaque from teeth, in order to prevent cavities (dental caries), gingivitis, and periodontitis. A dentist recommends having teeth cleaning or scaling done at least once a year.
